about

Note: This is an old Dublin Music Hall song I learned from my father, the late Jim Burgess. He had previously learned it from his mother Teresa Burgess (née Fitzsimons). After considerable research I was not able to successfully confirm the source or composer of this piece. But I believe it may have been written by the late Irish composer/writer Harry O’Donovan and possibly performed by the late Irish actor/performer Jimmy O’Dea.

lyrics

Bridget Mulligan ***

Verse 1
Now Bridget Mulligan used to live in a tenement top back room
In an old respectable neighbourhood they chased her to the Coombe
She sold fresh herrings on Fridays and on every Saturday night
She’d have you with the fish board just to show that she could fight

One day she found a ten bob note the joy it made her weep
She thought she’d chance her luck and bought a ticket and won the sweep

Chorus
Now she powders her face and wears a gold “terrara” on her head
They say she wears pyjamas and has feathers in her bed
She used to be the “Pride of the Coombe” but be the tearin’ hound
Bridget Mulligan’s one of the quality now with the thirty thousand pounds

Verse 2
She never could write but she makes her mark that whenever she signs a cheque
To the neighbours old she used to know she doesn’t give a wreck
She’s changed her talk entirely now she’s quite the la-di-dah
She calls her father Pater and her oul one her Mama

And when she sighs she says “Oh dear it is a beastly fag”
And forgets the time she used to beg for a squeeze of the old blue bag

Chorus

Verse 3
She’s got a lovely motor car all covered in paint and plush
With a family crest upon the door, a wrap, a bucket and brush
And a lad in a peeky cap she calls a “shover” to drive her around
He wraps her in a skunky rug that cost a hundred pounds

She got a fellow to lift her face at fifty quid says he,
“Be dads” says she “you can drop it again you wont get that from me”

Chorus
